Rise of the Colours and Under the Shadow of the Sun are two compelling examples of Kentelki's approach to imaginary landscapes. Each painting carries its own narrative, evolving over several years of layered revisions and reimaginings, resulting in works that truly seem to have a life of their own. Both are marked by the sun’s motif, an element that Kentelki appreciated for its rounded shape and the unique brushwork surrounding it, adding a sense of celestial mystery.

 

Under the Shadow of the Sun, a larger and equally complex composition, similarly began in the university studio in 2019. Kentelki describes this work as a journey filled with uncertainty, where he felt a continual drive to explore and refine. Although the idea of a mountain was loosely in mind, the landscape here is entirely imaginary. After a four-year pause, Kentelki revisited the piece in 2023, motivated by a desire to complete unfinished works. He likens the colours on the bottom to a play on words—it's both "under the shadow" and filled with vibrant light, evoking a relationship between illumination and shadow. It’s interesting to see how a painting has its own journey, its own existence. As fi it would almost have its own life.

Both paintings reflect Kentelki’s dedication to the process, revealing traces of his influences from abstract expressionism, with their bold colors and expressive forms, yet maintaining his unique abstraction. Through layers of color and texture, these pieces resonate with his exploration of form, energy, and the surreal possibilities of landscapes that exist purely within his mind.
